Across the Disciplines

Faculty members of these academic disciplines have graciously offered their expertise and networking resources to develop the programming for the Eckerd-Africa Initiative. If your discipline is interested in participating in the Eckerd-Africa Initiative by hosting an event or linking to an activity, please contact us.

International Relations and Global Affairs
Students involved in the International Relations and Global Affairs major are trained not only in Political Science, but in History, Economics, Anthropology, Literature, and Languages as well. Key courses include: "Theories of War and Peace," "Women and Politics World Wide," "Ethics and International Relations," and "International Political Economy."

History
The history faculty at Eckerd encourages students to pursue areas of interdisciplinary concentration. Our faculty members have formal ties to related fields such as East Asian Studies, American Studies, Women's and Gender Studies, Russian Studies, Classics, and Environmental Studies. Students are welcome to design concentrations or double majors with other fields in the humanities or social sciences, including political Science, international business, philosophy, religion, literature, and particular language fields.

Biology
Eckerd's unique Biology curriculum aims at developing the skills needed for creative investigation of living organisms, their life processes and their interactions with the environment. The Eckerd College biology faculty includes 10 members with diverse interests and expertise. Our small size has allowed us to maintain close ties between the different subdisciplines of biology. Unlike larger schools that may have separate departments of cell and molecular biology and organismic biology, at Eckerd these are all areas of a single, integrated biology curriculum that produces broadly trained biologists.

Marine Science
The marine science program at Eckerd College offers an excellent comprehensive “hands-on” marine science curriculum that is designed to serve as part of a liberal arts education, providing an awareness of the marine environment and its significance to humankind, so that our students may be better prepared to solve complex environmental and scientific problems. In addition to four areas of specialization: marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology and marine geophysics, Eckerd offers a broad range of elective courses, internship and research opportunities, and study abroad programs.

Creative Writing
The Writing Workshop prepares students to become serious writers. Writing students study the great works of yesterday and today, as they strive to hear their own personal music "in the deep heart's core." The faculty guide students on their journey toward a lifetime of learning and using the writer's craft in all of its many applications. This process begins in the writing workshop classes, courses in which students read and critique one another's writing. These courses teach students how to nurture their creativity and to employ the skills of the literary arts.

Visual Arts
As a college, Eckerd seeks to educate the whole person, and as a department we seek to raise each student's awareness of his/her own creative potential. The qualities we possess that our students routinely claim to value most, are our accessibility as teachers and mentors, and the climate of freedom we provide. The media we offer include, but are by no means limited to, drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, printmaking, digital arts, and video.

Environmental Studies
The environmental studies major provides students with an educational specialty grounded in the subjects and issues related to the natural environment and the relationship of the human being to the natural environment. The major offers the breadth and depth of interdisciplinary inquiry, integrating knowledge across the natural sciences, behavioral sciences, and humanities. Environmental studies develops analytical tools and skills for understanding the environment, while emphasizing the role of beliefs, values, and ethics in shaping human behavior.
